Sully Sailing Club - Autumn Newsletter 2009
So the end of Summer Time approaches again. The summer was not a vintage one weather wise (I am sure that I don't need to remind you all), but we have had some interesting boating. The Flat Holm cruise was a gentle sail up on the tide, but the wind died completely when we started back, so the two safety boats had their work cut out collecting us from various places around the Bristol Channel and towing us home. A new destination this year was Porthkerry Beach. It was a cold day and proved to be quite a tough sail down with some big waves off Barry Dock. A visit to the Gallery on the website will show a group of somewhat bedraggled sailors trying to get warm around the BBQ! The Pursuit Race was a bit of a blast with some fast reaching and a close finish. September finally provided some decent weather and excellent sailing into the start of the Transom series.

The current standings in the Transom series - after 8 races are: -
  • 1st Roger and Bob in the Osprey
  • 2nd Kevin Wilson in the Vortex
  • 3rd Martin Rudkin in the Laser
but there is plenty more racing to come!

VHF Radios

Quite a number of members now have their own hand held VHF radios - there are a couple of points concerning their use: -

1) There is no requirement to have a certificate of competence to use these radios on channels M1(37), M2 (37a) and 80 or 16 in emergency only, but you do need to register your individual radio on the Ofcom website. There is no charge for this.

2) The Committee has decided that the use of radios, for anything other than an emergency, by boats participating in races will be deemed a breach of the racing rules and may give rise to penalties.

Club Website

The club web address is www.sully-sailing.org.uk For those of you who have not yet viewed it, it contains information about the club (including the constitution) as well as the racing programme and results. There is also a gallery of photos taken around the club and of sailing action. If you have any items that you would like posted on the website, please send them to Eddy Hooper at ehooper@btinternet.com.

Wednesday evening sessions

Now that the Wednesday evening sailing has finished, there is a group who make a small amount of beer last a very long time - driving and all that (lightweights really) - in the Cons Club on South Road in Sully. We usually start at about 8:00pm. All are welcome to join. You can of course drink a lot of beer if you prefer, but we won't guarantee to take you home!

Dates for your diaries

There is a programme of events through the winter months: -

1) November 18th @ 7:30 in the Clubhouse - Viv has agreed to do another quiz to tax even the saltiest of brains.

2) December 23rd @ 8:00 in the Cons Club - Christmas drink and get together.

3) January 20th @ 7:30 in the clubhouse - Racing Rules chaired by Steve

4) February 18th - Bowling at the Sully Bowls Centre. Come along and try your hand at a very different (and difficult) sport.

5) March 3rd @ 7:30 in the Clubhouse - AGM followed by short briefing on use of VHF radios

Finally - March 7th is the Boat Jumble. Please put this in your diary as it is our main fundraising event and keeps your subscriptions at their current low level. Masts and halyards

If you are not planning to use your boat over the winter please take the mast down - this reduces the risk of wind damage and annoyance to the neighbours.

If you are leaving your mast up, then tie the halyards away from the mast so that they do not chatter.

Keep sailing Roger Dykes

Sully Sailing Club - Spring Newsletter 2009

Here we go again, another season approaches – lets all hope that the weather expends all its fury in this current spell and leaves us with a beautiful warm dry summer. Well we can dream!! I don’t really have any great memories of 2008 as I spent so much time off the water with recurrent gear failure. At least now the offending parts have been upgraded, so I am looking forward to a full season in 2009.

As usual at this time of year the main purpose of this newsletter is to remind members of some important matters

The Cardiff Boat Jumble – Sunday 8th March

This event is increasingly more important to maintain the financial safety of the club – the traders are coming under increasing pressure from Internet sales so we need to ensure that Cardiff is a venue that they like to attend. We need as many members as possible to assist with setting up on the Saturday evening and with supervising on the Sunday. You will have received an availability form with your annual subscription invoice - please fill in the reply slip and return to Charlie or Malcolm so that time can be allocated most efficiently.

Annual Subscriptions

You should have already received your annual subs invoice – there are no increases this year. Don’t forget that you are entitled to a discount of £10 if you pay before the end of April. Also, please update address, phone number and particularly e-mail address – the club saves a fair bit by sending information electronically rather by post

Annual General Meeting

Will be held at the Clubhouse on Wednesday 4th March at 8: 00 pm. This is your opportunity to have a say in the running of the club and the Sailing Programme for 2009. You could even be elected onto the committee if you are interested.

Racing News

As usual all the results are posted on the website. Thanks to Sam & Viv for recording the times, to Martin Wyatt for computing the results and to Eddy for maintaining them on the website

Winter Programme

There was a very enjoyable quiz night held on 19th November which was settled by just a single point between the teams. On 22nd January we enjoyed an excellent evening of carpet bowls in the Sully Bowls Centre. Thanks to Chris Parr for arranging this. If you thought it looks easy come along next year to find out for yourself! Our next event is an evening of Safety Boat theory. Chris Parr will discuss aspects of boat handling, recovery of boats in distress, use of the radio etc. It will be held in the Club House on Wednesday 18th February. Please do attend as I think we could all do with some revision. Lastly we have a skittles evening on April 15th – the venue for this has yet .to be confirmed

Future Dates

We have not yet booked the Annual Dinner and Prize Giving but it will be in early May. Notification will be on the website and by email. Please try to come along – it is an evening of fun, food and wine (or beer) and some gentle banter aimed at certain well-known members.

And Finally: - Congratulations to Rex on being awarded the MBE for Services to Scouting. and Best wishes to Colin Stephenson who recently underwent a quadruple bypass operation. Get well soon Colin, and we look forward to seeing you back at the waterside very soon. Splice the main brace!!

Sully Sailing Club - Autumn Newsletter 2008

Hello all,

As most of you will know, Roger and Rhian have recently moved to Sully, Roger was fed up with being a valley boy and wanted to move to the sea-side to prepare for his retirement (but mainly to cut down on their travelling). Anyway, being in mid move he has not yet been able to set up his computer so yours truly has volunteered to write this edition of the club digest.

WINTER PROGRAMME

Quiz Night. You should have already received an email from me on this. It will be held on Wednesday 19th November at 1930 hrs in the clubhouse.

Christmas Drink This will be held as usual in the Sully Inn on Wednesday 17th December at 2000hrs. This is one of the few occasions when we can all get together on a purely social basis for a good old natter and to put the world to rights, and it sets up the festive season. The last couple of years there has been a very disappointing turnout for this event, so this year lets break all records and fill the pub to bursting !!

Indoor Bowls Chris is trying to organise an indoor bowls match which has provisionally been pencilled in for Thursday 22nd January, probably at the Sully Sports Club (the old BP Plastics club). As I say, this one is to be confirmed so please keep checking on the club web-site.

Safety Boat and Race Rules A meeting has been called for Wednesday 18th February at the clubhouse. This will consist of a talk on “Good Safety Boat Practice”. This will cover boat handling skills, rescue procedures, and general tips on the use of the safety boat when you are on duty. In response to a request from some members, this meeting will also offer a chance for a discussion on Racing as it applies to this club. There have been some suggestions on changes to the race programme, and on the way that the races are run. This is YOUR chance to come and have your say, so if you are a regular racer, and you feel that things could be improved, come along and tell us. Any changes agreed at this meeting will then be carried forward to be put to the AGM for ratification.

Annual General Meeting The AGM will be held at the clubhouse on Wednesday 4th March at 2000 hrs. Again I have to say that attendance at the AGM has been very disappointing in recent years. Please turn up and join in. This is when we elect the committee so if you are fed up with seeing the same old faces making all the decisions, and you feel that you wish to become more involved, come and put up for election, or at least make your views known.

Cardiff Boat Jumble Put THIS in your diary. Sunday 8th March 2009. This is the BIG one, the source of most of the clubs income. This is what enables the club to function whilst at the same time keeping the subscriptions down to a reasonable level. If you attend no other club function PLEASE give us your support on this one. We need all the help we can get on the Saturday evening setting up, and on the day, showing the stallholders where to find their pitches, manning the gates, and on cleaning the site up afterwards. Bob puts an enormous effort into organising this event and he needs YOUR help. You will receive a form in the New Year asking you to state when you can be available. Please complete this and return it as directed.

Annual Dinner and Presentation of Prizes / Skittles Match The Annual Dinner has not yet been given a date, so please keep checking the web-site in the New Year. There has also been the suggestion that we could hold a skittles match possibly on Wednesday 15th April.

That covers all of the winter programme as it stands, but do please keep checking the web-site for any up-dates or changes.

SAILING

Sailing will continue right up until Christmas as per the published programme and we then have a “closed” season until we start again in April next year. However there are a few hardy (mad, crazy, lunatic) souls who continue to sail right through the winter whenever the weather permits. They meet at the club at 0930 hrs each Sunday and sail their own version of a frostbite series. There are no organised races, these events are sailed just for the sheer hell of it, but all are welcome to join in. However it should be noted that there is NO safety boat in attendance on these occasions. On the subject of racing, there was a race a while ago in which half the fleet sailed the wrong course and were disqualified. There were subsequent appeals, which are still ongoing, and these were fully discussed at the September Committee meeting. It was decided at this meeting that it might help if some of the rules governing our racing were clarified and so, with immediate effect from that date, the following rules would be stringently applied.

• The “Flag” buoy when used to extend the start line would NOT form part of the course for all subsequent laps. If possible it would be lifted once the race had got under way and re-laid for the start of the next race. However, even if it is still in place it should be ignored. It is only used to temporarily extend the line to cope with the number of boats at the massed start and is not needed once the fleet has spread out around the course.

• Once the safety boat has been launched, the course on the board is the course that must be sailed. Nobody other than the OOD has the right to alter, or modify, the course. It is the responsibility of all those racing to familiarise themselves with the course set before launching. Please ask for help if you do not fully understand what is on the board.

• The OOD has full responsibility to decide whether to race or not on the day. Consideration must be given not just on whether it is safe to race, but especially on the difficulty of launching and recovering the safety boat. If, the OOD having called off the scheduled racing, members wish to sail just for fun, then they obviously may do so, but one of the club’s most valuable assets, the safety boat, must never be unnecessarily put at risk. Members who want to race must never put pressure on the OOD to change his mind.

• There are three people on duty for each scheduled race. Two of these should man the safety boat, and the third should act as “Beach Master” to help launch and recover all craft sailing that day.

Safety Boat Qualifications

Back in July I sent out an email the contents of which are copied below. We have had correspondence from our insurers with regard to the club's liability and one of the things that has come out of this is our liability should there be an accident involving the safety boat. We have declared that the boat is driven at all times by a competent person, but we are aware that this is not always the case. We therefore need to know just which members are, and which members are not, "competent", in other words who has had any training and who hasn't.

Could you therefore please let the club know:

a) Have you had any training ? (Even if it was only basic instruction from another club member)

b) Do you have any formal qualifications ? RYA Power Boat Level 2, Safety Boat Handling etc. and if so where and when did you do this training.

c) You have had no training whatsoever.

Unfortunately I had a very limited response to this request, only about half a dozen members bothered to reply. We do need this information so I am asking again for your co-operation in this matter. We have included a Safety Boat talk in the winter programme, see above, which we hope will go some way to helping the situation, but if anyone should require ”hands on” training we are now very fortunate to have Chris Parr who is a qualified power boat instructor. Chris has now joined the committee as the club training officer so please speak to him, as it is our intention that the general level of boat handling skills with regard to the club safety boat should be improved.

We will eventually be posting a full list of all members and their level of competence in the clubhouse once all the information is to hand.

Club Boats

Please note that the “Lark” dinghy has been removed from the list of official club boats. Should any member consider using this boat in the future then be aware that it is no longer covered by the club’s insurance. Safety Boats

The main safety boat will be going back to the manufacturers, Ribcraft at Yeovil, in the New Year for a full service.

I am in the process of refurbishing the controls on the old safety boat. It has now gone “continental” having been converted to left-hand drive. This is to allow for the fitting of a new engine control box on the starboard side of the steering column. Time will tell whether this proves to be an improvement or not, but either way I fear that by the time I have completed the work it will be next season before we find out.

I think that that is all for now, I look forward to seeing you both on the water and at the winter social events.

Kindest Regards to All,

Malcolm.

Sully Sailing Club – Spring Newsletter 2008

The new season is now well under way, although still quite chilly on the water. We have already sailed 8 races in the Early bird series with 11 boats competing. Following the AGM at the beginning of March, Eddy Hooper is now the Commodore and Steve Marshall is Vice Commodore

Annual Dinner and Prize Giving

This will take place on Saturday 10th May at 7:30 for 8:00 at the Sully Inn. Enclosed is a copy of the menu and a form to indicate your choices(s). Please return to me by 30th April – after then it may not be possible to guarantee places. Please feel free to bring family and friends - £15 per head is pretty reasonable for a three course meal plus entertainment from the Commodore and the Sailing Officer.

Boat Jumble

Once again the Boat Jumble provided a good contribution to the club’s funds. It was down quite a bit on recent years but still a worth while event. Also down on previous years was the number of members who turned up to assist – there were only enough to man the entrances and provide refreshments. It has been suggested that quite a few of the public did not pay for their entry as we did not have enough members to patrol the fences! The boat jumble is a very important part of our financial programme: without it we would not be able to provide and run the club house and safety boats. Please do your bit and come along for a couple of hours at least. It is normally the second Sunday in March – put it on your calendar now!

Annual Subs

Don’t forget that if you pay your subs before the 1st May you can deduct £10. Go on, do it now! Sailing Programme

Once again we are offering introductory sailing for adults during May and training for juniors during June. If you know anyone who would like to join these events please let me know. This year we have a new event – a cruise to Porthkerry with a BBQ on the beach on 17th August

Racing etiquette

When you have finished your race, please sail clear of the finishing line until all boats have completed the race. It makes it very difficult for the timekeepers if boats that have already finished keep crossing and re-crossing the line.

I am looking forward to some warmer weather and nice steady breezes – not the gusty offshore winds that have been around so far this year. Hope to see lots of you out there.

Lee oh!

Roger Dykes

Sully Sailing Club – Autumn Newsletter 2007

Another summer draws to a close. It did not turn out to be as hot as last years, but was definitely wetter for some. The summer has been eventful with extremes of weather but some good sailing has been had, mainly by Steve Marshall if the results are anything to go by!

The safety boat has been involved in salvage operations during the summer - the spoils can be seen in the compound in the form of a Fletcher 14 speedboat … well the hull at least, which was towed ashore one Wednesday night after it was spotted drifting towards Sully Island on the flood tide. We are currently waiting to find the legal status of ownership, but hope to take it to next year’s Boat Jumble.

We also rescued a Jet skier who had fallen off his steed and was unable to swim as fast as it was drifting away in the wind. He climbed into our boat with great enthusiasm and was then reunited with his craft, but declined to get back on it as he had lost his key in the mellee. I asked him if it floated. “Yes it has a yellow strap” he replied. “What, like that one over there?” I pointed to a floating object about 10 feet away!

Even with the key he was not very keen to get back on the jetski, so we towed him back to the public slipway and ridicule from his mates.

We are now well into the Transom series so do hope that you continue to sail through the Autumn and if you have not managed to get out yet, well now’s your chance – the winds seem to have abated a little for the time being!

Informal Wednesday Evening Work Party

Once the days get too short to make a Wednesday evening sail more of an afternoon sail, some members will meet at the clubhouse at between 6 pm and 6.30 pm to undertake work on the clubhouse itself, maintenance of safety boats etc. This is usually followed by a couple of drinks in the local pub. All members are welcome to join in!

Compound

We are making an effort to tidy up our patch. We need you to identify any masts or equipment that you have tied against the fence so that we can remove those that are no longer required. We intend to dispose of the surplus items in March 2008 at the Boat Jumble.

We could do with some help please note that the next work party is on Sunday 21st October at 1000.

We are planning to replace the Fence that runs along the cricket pitch side of the yard, as well as looking much nicer it will enhance the security of the compound.

Please note that if you are not intending to sail your boat through the winter it is neighbourly and much safer to take the mast down. If you leave the mast up please tie the halyards so that they do not clatter against the mast. It is also advisable to tie/weight your boat down so that it does not get blown around in the winter gales.

Racing News

The summer series is now complete and was won by Steve Marshall who also won the Regatta, in quite tough conditions with the wind gusting to 30MPH. A couple of visits were made to Flatholm. The first resulted in a lot of work for the safety boats as the wind disappeared and left the fleet drifting, the second ended with one of those monster sails back – beating into a choppy sea in a force 3/4 but with the tide. Very wet for some, but fantastic! The Centripump cup will be raced for when we have 3 slow fleet boats on the water at the same time , hopefully sometime during the Transom series this Autumn. (Stop Press: - Centripump was won by Garry and Caroline in the Wanderer –Raaar) The Round Island race will be rescheduled for a suitable Sunday and form part of the Transom series. We are now into the Transom series. The remainder of the program looks like this :- The winter programme

Why not come along to one of the events we have planned for the Autumn and Winter.

• Wednesday 17th October at 1930 – summer results review with food and drink

• Wednesday 21st November at 1930 – Quiz Night with food and drink

• Wednesday 19th December at 1930 – Sully Inn Christmas drinks

The remainder of the Winter social program will be decided by those who come along to the results review and /or quiz night.

Sully Sailing Club Website: www.sully-sailing.org.uk/

Please take a look at the website. It contains the full programme, results etc. plus photographs of sailing in Sully Bay.

Our original web site died in the summer, but Eddy (and Brian) managed to salvage some bits of it. Eddy has now rebuilt it as you see it today. We are still looking for any contributions, particularly anything about the earlier days of the club.

We hope you have all enjoyed the past summer and our new facilities, and will continue sailing through the autumn. Do not hesitate to bring your ideas on club organisation, events etc. to the notice of a committee member!

Ready ‘bout

Roger Dykes.

Sully Sailing Club - Spring Newsletter 2007

So another sailing season is upon us I wonder if this summer will be as hot as last year's!

The first thing to do is a little house keeping: -

After 8 years stirling work as our secretary Charlie Harris has decided to step down to concentrate on improving his sailing I didn t think it was that bad Charles, winner of the Early Bird last year! Sincere thanks from us all.

As the new secretary I can be contacted on: -
  • 01443 440164
  • 07970 216538
  • randr@arfryn41.fsnet.co.uk
Or you can write to me at Arfryn , Penrhys Road, Ystrad, Pentre, CF41 7SW. (Rhian still gets excited when the postman delivers mail!!)

Other club officers are: -

  • Commodore Patrick Mather
  • Vice Commodore Eddy Hooper
  • Treasurer Malcolm Staddon
  • Sailiing Secretary Eddy Hooper
  • Membership Secretary Bob Lang
  • Compound Master Peter Havard
  • Minutes of meetings and Race Results Steve Marshall
Other committee members Mike Fuller, Sam Fellows, Viv Coles, Rex Hendrickson, Colin Stevenson, Charlie Harris

Important Announcement

The Annual Dinner and Prize Giving evening will be held on Saturday 12th May in the 1st floor room at the Sully Inn. Cost is £15 per person and a menu is attached. Can you please fill in the confirmation and choice form as soon as possible and return to me post it, put it in the mail box inside the entrance to the club house, email me or online on the website. We had a good turnout last year also good to see some juniors, so lets see if we can do even better this year. Any of you who have trophies, can you return them urgently to me or Eddy so that we can get them engraved (for 2 years OK I know!) Now back to the regular stuff

Club Website

Eddy is helping Brian with the administration of the web site. Having created our great little site, Brian at Bloobird does not have a lot of time time to keep on top of it now. We appreciate all that he can do for us.Thanks to Brian for his efforts. Don t forget that there is a Gossip section for informal chats - about the club and sailing of course! We are still looking for any archive material about the growth of the club over the years if you have anything at all contact Peter Havard.

Club Development Plan

We are still looking for any ideas about future development of the club. Contact any committee member if you have any thoughts.

Club Safety Boat

Can I reiterate Charlie's comments about the rope/winch in the Autumn newsletter. As he said, the rope is provided to prevent any injury from the flailing winch handle when launching. However it is important not to untie the rope until the boat is afloat. The trailer has rollers and the boat will fall off the back of the trailer even when it is on level ground, let alone on the slope of the slipway, with the risk of damage to the engine. The rope is permanently attached to the trailer and passed through the eye on the stem of the boat and then tied off on the trailer with a one pull slip knot. To release the boat simply pull the rope to release the knot and let the rope run through the eye as the boat reverses away but only once the boat is afloat.

Please check the Sailing Programme for your safety boat roster it is normally twice a year. It is your responsibility to find someone to swap with you if you are not available. Also let your OOD know so that he/she is aware of the change. If you need a copy of the contact data base let me know.

Club House

The Wednesday Club has continued through the winter with some improvements in the club house. The hot water cylinder is now enclosed in a cupboard, there is a sink unit in the WC for washing cups etc after use and we now have a wind direction and speed station fixed above the balcony with the readout to the left of the balcony doors. We also fitted new steering cables to the inflatable safety boat. It is not entirely true that the Wednesday Club is just an excuse for a visit to the pub, but the time spent at the club house did seem to get shorter as the winter went on I blame the weather, Wednesday evenings did seem to attract the wettest and windiest of some pretty poor weather! One particular member (who shall remain nameless of course just look for the RS700 at the front of the fleet) got later as the weeks went by so that we only had to mention it was time for the pub and he would turn up. Eventually he gave up coming to the club and went straight to the pub instead his excuse was that we were leaving the club earlier!!

Boat Jumble

Once again we had a very successful Boat Jumble - the weather was kind and despite a small reduction in the number of traders (due to online trading probably) we have been able to boost the club funds again so that we have recovered from the cost of buying the new safety boat. As always a huge vote of thanks to Bob for organising it all. Thanks also to the members who turned up to help on the day(s).

Sailing Programme

You should all have received a printed copy of the programme and it is also on the website. You may have noticed that in addition to the now normal Junior Training in June, we are offering Adult Training in May.

Adult Training

This will not in fact be a formal training programme as we do not have the qualified members to offer any sort of certification at the end. What we are offering is the opportunity for adults to come and try sailing as a new (to them) recreation, so if you have any friends or colleagues who might be interested in sailing tell them about what we can do at Sully Sailing Club. Anyone interested should contact me.

Can I put out a request to those of you who have juniors at the club? Do you have wet suits etc that they have grown out of and that could be used by new (and probably smaller) juniors? If so let me know and I will be happy to be the no fee broker.

We are also looking for members with sit in boats Enterprise, GP, Wanderer, Wayfarer who are willing to take out the adult trainees on Thursday evenings in May. If you are not available, would you be willing to let someone else sail your boat for this purpose? We will of course check insurance cover if someone else sails your boat. Safety boat cover will be provided. If you can help with this let me know.

Junior Training

Please let me have the names of any juniors who wish to participate in the training scheme ion June.

If racing is not your thing, there are several members who cruise while the racing is on. This gives the advantage of safety boat cover. If you go out cruising, please let the race officer (usually Sam and/or Viv) know that you will be out and which way you intend to go they can keep an eye out for you from the command centre and notify the safety boat of any problems via the VHF radios. We have already had some interesting sailing this season. Those who gloated at getting the time right on 18th March (clocks changed!) were greeted by a spiteful gusty offshore wind. This enabled a close inspection of the bottom of my new boat (and several others) which revealed a large piece missing from the trailing edge of the centreboard. The whole idea of buying a fibreglass boat was to get away from all these repairs!!

Sunday 1st April was a blow out far too stormy but Easter Sunday was just perfect. Nice steady force 3 from the SW, flat water and sunshine we ll have some more of that please.

and finally, Don t forget that if you pay your subs before the 1st May you are entitled to a £10 discount.

Looking forward to seeing as many of you as possible on the water. If you have not got fully formed webbed feet yet, it would be good to see you at the club anyway.

Up spinnaker!!

Roger Dykes
